First impression upon walking outdoors in the evening: sweet smell of MILKWEED and other ripe summer flowers. From Lookout Rock: It’s so hot the sky is sagging. It’s completely down over Mt. Mansfield, and it’s covering Camel’s Hump with haze. It’s very steamy out tonight. As I started down the trail to the Nature Center, a WHITE-TAILED DEER took off out of the brush. It’s grace and the white flash of its tail were refreshing. Saw my first WOODCOCK ON THE GROUND in the flat woods between the Lookout and the Nature Center. It’s a dark bird, well-camouflaged on the woodland floor. The beak is distinctive.
